Even though these toys have been produced by Hasbro since the year 1983, a total of thirty one years, they have been rapidly gaining popularity over the past few years. For those of us who remember My Little Pony from our childhoods, some of us are surprised by just how much these ponies have changed over the years. Thankfully, though the line has changed, the ponies are still cute and hold all of the excitement and entertainment from younger years. Today, well take a look at some of the ways these ponies have changed and what exactly My Little Pony is today.
The Creation of MLP
When this line of toys was first developed and worked on by Bonnie Zacherle, Charles Muenchinger, and Steve D'Aguanno. Bonnie Zacherle was working as an editor at the time when the idea for lovable and relatable pony characters was born. She worked with Charles Muenchinger, who was a sculptor at the time, to create the forms that they wanted for the toys. Throughout this project, Steve D'Aguanno was the manager who helped to tie everything together and make things work. When Bonnie received the patent for their design of the pony figurines, she began working at Hasbro where the design was created and marketed to children across the country.
This all took place in 1983, and since then MLP has changed dramatically; the ponies have gone through several transitions in appearance, have been shown in television shows, commercials, given as toys with McDonald's kids' meals, and even been branched off into other lines (such as My Little Kitty, My Little Puppy, or My Little Bunny for example) and other products for children and young pre-teens.
Changes throughout Time
Like many other toy lines, series, and character set, these ponies changed over time to be made more appealing to the current generation. There have been several 'generations' of ponies since they were originally produced. These different generations are all somewhat different from the last but they are still based in the original design in order to keep the overall look and feel of the design so that it is very similar to the original. The reason that the design was changed was in order to impress a wider variety of children in more recent years; the changes made them more fun and visually appealing to the young children of the time The first generation consisted of Earth Ponies, Unicorn Ponies, Sea Ponies, Flutter Ponies and Pegasus Ponies. These were the types of ponies that were used to create an entire world of ponies and excited many people for the wide variety of ponies; this had never been done before.
In the second generation, the ponies were changed to a design that was supposed to attract more children-legs were made longer and their bodies were made smaller and thinner. They also had jewels for eyes and had heads that you could turn. These didn't sell well, especially in the United States, and was one of the least popular generations. It was discontinued after just one year of sales.
After this unsuccessful generation, the third generation was produced and became more successful than the last. They abandoned the jeweled eyes and turning heads, and also adjusted the ponies' body shapes and sizes closer to what they had initially been, with just a few differences from the first generation. These were much more appreciated and led to other various merchandise being created over the years until the fourth generation was produced.
The fourth generation came out only a few years ago, in 2010, and is one of the most popular generations yet. There is now a television series, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, that is hugely popular. The series relates to the toys which feature nine main characters which are loved by children across the world. The TV series helped to create more of a story for the pony characters and became more relatable for the children who watch it; the show also strives to teach good values of friendship, compassion, and understanding among their peers.
My Little Pony Now
This is a series that has changed a lot over the years and has made a huge impact in the country, as well as across the world. Even though there have been some successes, some failures, and many changes made through the past three decades, these toys and the series that goes with it still stands to teach good values to children everywhere.
With the television series, 'Friendship is Magic', the show has only reached more children than before and is able to convey the messages in a more personal way than ever before. With characters like Twilight Sparkle and Fluttershy, the show and the ponies are used to display to young children all of the reasons why it is important to trust one another, tell the truth, ask for help when you need it, work together, and other valuable lessons. It also helps kids express themselves, find who they really are, and have fun every day.
Unlike a lot of the TV series and toy lines that have come out recently, My Little Pony is one of the few of them that still tries to teach real, valuable lessons to children. It is even great for some of the older children and teenagers and manages to be fun, cute, and teach the important values all at once. The characters have developed greatly since the first toy line in 1983 and they are continuing to change and improve today.
